On the morning of August 24, Mr. Tran Xuan Anh, Secretary and Chairman of Con Co Special Zone (Quang Tri Province) confirmed that a tourist was stranded on the island due to the impact of storm No. 5.
Accordingly, the guest was from the province and traveled to the island a few days ago. When storm No. 5 appeared, from the morning of August 24, all ships were banned from the sea, so they could not return to the mainland.
Mr. Xuan Anh said that the local government has arranged forces to support and ensure safe accommodation for this tourist before the storm made landfall.
By the afternoon of August 24, tourists will join the islanders and soldiers in a safe shelter.
Con Co is located about 30 km from the mainland of Quang Tri. Since the morning of the same day, the island has had heavy rain, strong winds, and waves about 1m high. The special forces government also deployed a plan to move all residents and military units to a safe area before 6pm.
Previously, on August 23, Quang Tri province held an urgent meeting, requesting localities to proactively respond to storm No. 5, be ready to evacuate people in coastal areas, low-lying areas and areas at risk of landslides and flash floods. Dams and irrigation works have also been inspected, currently the reservoir capacity is only 55-60% of the design, ensuring safety during storms.
