On January 19, Con Dao National Park announced that from December 14, 2024 to January 14, 2025, it had successfully rescued and relocated 14 sea turtle nests, with a total of 1,247 eggs brought to safe incubation lakes. The park also recorded 35 nests hatching, releasing 1,910 baby turtles into the sea under control.
According to Con Dao National Park, the positive results in the early new year show the safety and restoration of sea turtle nesting grounds, promising an exciting 2025 when many mother turtles will continue to return to "safe habitats" to maintain their species.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Duc - engineer of the Department of Conservation and International Cooperation, Con Dao National Park Management Board - said that sea turtles lay eggs all year round, but the peak is from June to October every year.
In 2024, 387 mother sea turtles were recorded to have laid 1,161 nests, with 111,986 eggs in Con Dao, of which the Bay Canh Ranger Station rescued 849 nests (73.2%). The hatching success rate reached 76.8%, with an average incubation period of 54 days.
In 2024, the number of sea turtle nests will decrease. The reason is due to the nesting cycle of sea turtles and the impact of the El Nino phenomenon. According to forecasts, in 2025, the number of sea turtles returning to nest will increase again according to the cycle, higher than the previous year.
Sea turtle conservation work with the participation of the community (volunteers, businesses, tourists, etc.) has been promoted and brought about good results. Baby turtles returning to the ocean carry with them the hope of extending the miraculous survival journey of sea turtles.
"Each turtle egg nest is a testament to the tireless efforts of workers at Con Dao National Park, along with the community's joint efforts, with the hope that Con Dao will not only be a paradise for tourists, but also a peaceful land for rare sea turtles," said Mr. Duc.
