The new BBC documentary series Planet Earth III received 5 nominations for the 2024 Emmy Award. This is a noble award, considered the Oscar of the television industry (films and programs). Among them, 2 nominations belong to episode 6 "Extremes". This is a documentary that explores deeply in a land with an extremely harsh environment, with beautiful images of the most famous cave system in Vietnam - Son Doong.
The documentary Extremes was nominated for "Best Cinematography for a Non-Fiction Program" and "Best Music Composition for a Documentary Series". The Emmys Awards will announce the final results on September 15, 2024 on ABC channel.
"Extremes" was filmed over 3 weeks in early 2022, the BBC crew braved difficult conditions to capture the incredible beauty of Son Doong cave, En cave, Va cave and Nuoc Nut cave.
This is the first time British television company BBC has made a documentary about the beauty of natural wonders and natural landscapes of Asia to viewers around the world. The Planet Earth III series has been airing since October 2023, most notably episode 6 "Extremes" shown on November 26, 2023, specifically introducing spectacular footage inside Son Doong cave.
Previously, to make the episode "Extremes", BBC cameraman John Shier and the whole crew spent 17 days living underground to film scenes inside Son Doong cave.
Luke Nelson, another cameraman, shared with Variety that shooting under the lighting conditions in the cave was the biggest challenge. The film crew used many specialized cameras and lenses to capture the most beautiful scenes of the cave and underground river. They had to use the most advanced technology and unique filming angles to capture every moment and movement in the world's largest cave system. It took the crew 1 week to film from the cave entrance to the underground river and sinkhole 1.
February 11-16, 2022 the film crew moved to sinkhole 2 and spent another 6 days filming in this area. They focused on recording the diverse ecosystem inside the cave and exploring the magic of Eden Garden (a tropical forest growing below sinkhole 2).
The music nomination for episode 6 "Extremes" recognizes the work of composers Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and Sara Barones. Their music makes documentaries more vivid, captivating sounds, attracting viewers to the breathtaking natural world.
