Juliana Marins, 27, climbed Rinjani volcano on June 20 with a group of 6 people with a tour guide. At around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday (June 21), she was reported missing after falling down the cliff.
Marins' body was found on the evening of June 24 (local time), Jakarta Post reported on June 25.
On June 23, Indonesian authorities said that Marins fell from a height of about 600m and could not find any signs of her when using a drone.
On June 24, Muhamad Hariyadi, the captain of the search and rescue team of the nearby city of Mataram, said that many rescue workers and a helicopter were dispatched to search for the female tourist. However, the helicopter could not fly over the Rinjani peak due to bad weather conditions.
The search team discovered a stick and a mountain climbing light believed to belong to Marins, but rescue conditions were difficult due to the inability to pinpoint the exact location of the tourists in distress.
Using a heat-sensing drone, the authorities located the body near the cape.
A rescue worker approached the victim's body and checked it. Rescue forces determined that Marin had died.
"The tourist's body was brought down the mountain on the morning of June 25," said Mohammad Syafii, head of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency.
Marins is a Brazilian dancer, she posted photos of backpacking in Thailand and Vietnam before coming to Indonesia. She once shared on her personal Instagram and in a video sent to her family: "I came here to see the volcano".
Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia, located north of Lombok Island. The mountain is located in the national park of the same name, attracting thousands of tourists to trekking and camping every year.
Rinjani is an active volcano. The last time the mountain broke out was in late October 2015, with a column of smoke over 3,600m high.
The Rinjani climbing journey usually lasts 2-3 days with a length of about 30km. The most dangerous section of the road is the E-shaped section from the campsite to the top of the mountain and back. The road is narrow, steep and mainly made of soil, rocks, and sand sunk from the volcanic ash.
In 2018, hundreds of long-distance walkers and tour guides were stranded by a landslide on Rinjani Mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the island. At least 17 people have died across the island, including one on the mountain.
