On the morning of August 6th, in Hanoi, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) in coordination with Tam Chuc Tourism Service Co., Ltd. organized a scientific seminar "Muong cultural identity: Traditional values and contemporary vitality".
The program gathers a large number of scientists, experts, managers, representatives of state management agencies, businesses, along with lecturers, students and pupils to exchange theoretical and practical issues on preserving and promoting the cultural values of the Muong people in the new development stage.
Speaking at the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong - Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that researching and promoting the cultural values of the Muong people is meaningful both scientifically and practically.
As one of the long-standing residential communities of Vietnam, the Muong people possess a rich treasure of tangible and intangible heritage, from Muong Mo, gongs, languages, indigenous knowledge, stilt houses, life cycle rituals to traditional community institutions. These are values that contribute to enriching Vietnamese cultural identity," Ms. Dang Thi Thu Huong shared.
Muong culture is considered to have a particularly important position. As one of the long-standing residential communities in Vietnam, the Muong people possess a rich heritage treasure with a system of languages, Muong Mo, gongs, indigenous knowledge, stilt house architecture, life cycle rituals, community institutions and many unique types of folk culture.
However, under the impact of industrialization, urbanization, digital transformation and international integration, many traditional cultural spaces are gradually shrinking, and some cultural practices are facing the risk of fading away. This poses an requirement to both effectively preserve and promote heritage values to serve development.
Starting from that reality, the seminar was organized to create an inter-disciplinary academic forum for researchers, managers and experts to share new research results, exchange practical experiences, and at the same time propose solutions to fully identify the unique values of Muong culture as well as the adaptability of traditional values in modern society.
Within the framework of the program, 6 typical presentations were presented, focusing on topics such as the cultural identity of the Muong people, the historical relationship between Muong - Vietnam, worldview and Mo Muong, ritual power and community institutions, history of the formation of Muong communities in Thanh Hoa, and the promotion of Muong cultural values in tourism development in Ninh Binh.
The presentations are approached from many perspectives such as history, anthropology, ethnology, culture and heritage management, contributing to clarifying many academic issues, while opening up new research directions in heritage conservation associated with development.
With the participation of many inter-sectoral experts and valuable research, the seminar is expected to supplement the scientific basis for the implementation of Decree No. 269/2026/ND-CP, and at the same time contribute to promoting research, preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values of the Muong people in particular and ethnic minorities in Vietnam in general in the new development stage.
