Since COVID-19, North Korea has begun to ease restrictions in mid-2023. However, it was not until February 20, 2025 that Western tourists were allowed to visit the Rason Economic Zone. This is a place to explore North Korea's business side, including factories, ports, foreign language schools, taekwondo schools and banks.
However, Koryo Tours, a China-based travel company specializing in tours to North Korea, suddenly announced on its website on March 5: "We received a notice that tours to Rason have been suspended. We will update you soon".
The company has not yet given an exact reason for this change.
Young Pioneer Tours, another travel agency specializing in North Korean tours, also recommends that tourists planning to travel to North Korea in April and May do not rush to book air tickets until further information is available.
Some travel agencies have revealed to the BBC that the travel of foreign tourists in North Korea after 5 years of closing the border due to COVID-19 is still limited. Specifically, tourists have less opportunities to walk on the streets and talk to local people. Phone signals and internet access are also not available.
In addition to opening the door to the tourism industry, North Korea has also begun preparing for the annual Pyongyang International Marathon in April.
