According to Lao Dong's records on December 26, flight tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to many localities on January 24 and 25, 2025 (December 25 and 26 of the lunar calendar) are fully booked.
The lowest airfare for a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on January 25 is 3.6 million VND, flying at bad times like midnight or early morning. If you want to fly at a better time, you have to pay 7.2 to 10 million VND/way.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the booking rate from January 22 to January 26, 2025 (ie December 23 to 27) on routes from Ho Chi Minh City to cities such as Hue, Pleiku, Chu Lai, Tuy Hoa, Quy Nhon, Dong Hoi, Vinh, Thanh Hoa... all reached 100%.
On the other hand, the booking rate for flights back to Ho Chi Minh City these days is only 5-30%.
The lowest round-trip ticket price from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on January 25 to February 2 is 7.1 - 7.5 million VND. However, the number of empty seats left is quite small, so passengers have few options when traveling with family or large groups.
In the opposite direction, the round-trip airfare from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is only 2.3 million VND/person, with many time slots for passengers to choose from. However, because passengers tend to go from the South to the North to return home during Tet, the number of airfares sold for this route is still quite low.
Similarly, round-trip air tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, Nha Trang, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong... have higher prices than usual and are scarce.
In particular, the route Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang from January 25 to February 2 is the lowest at 6.6 million VND, only showing round-trip tickets with direct flights in the early morning.
Round-trip flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang cost the lowest 4.9 million VND, from Ho Chi Minh City to Hai Phong cost the lowest 7.1 million VND, and tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Quang Ninh are sold out.
On the contrary, tickets from other provinces to Ho Chi Minh City during this time are cheap, and the number of empty seats is still high.
Tourist flights from Hanoi to the Central and Southern provinces such as Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc, Da Lat, Binh Dinh, etc. before and after Tet still have many seats with an occupancy rate of 20-50% depending on the day and flight route.
Mr. Bui Thanh Tu, Marketing Director of BestPrice, commented that airfares for the Lunar New Year 2025 will remain high, with an increase of 10% to 15% compared to Tet 2024.
The peak period is from the 2nd to the 6th of Tet, when people start traveling and return. Hot flights departing from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to famous tourist destinations continue to record significant price increases.
Forecasting a slight increase in airfares and service prices during Tet, travel agencies have proactively prepared tickets and services half a year in advance to have the best tour and combo prices for tourists.
“The number of domestic tourism products traveling by plane during Tet 2025 is expected to increase slightly by about 20% compared to the same period last year, despite airfares remaining a significant obstacle. This trend is mainly driven by increased tourism demand due to the long Lunar New Year holiday,” said Mr. Tu.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the difference in ticket prices is due to the increased demand for travel home for Tet in the northern provinces. Therefore, airfares from the South to the North are also higher than the opposite direction. After Tet, people move to the South to work, so ticket prices from the South to the North are higher again.
From January 21 to February 9, 2025, the number of flights taking off and landing will be adjusted to increase to 48 flights/hour during the day and 46 flights/hour at night.
The additional slots due to the increased coordination parameters have been confirmed by the Civil Aviation Authority for Vietnamese airlines to supplement the supply capacity on currently full routes from Ho Chi Minh City to the Central and Northern provinces such as Vinh, Dong Hoi, Thanh Hoa, Hue, Chu Lai, Pleiku, Buon Me Thuot...
