A day after a 0-2 defeat to Hanoi FC in round 6 of Night Wolf V.League 2023-2024, The Cong Viettel decided to appoint Mr. Thomas Dooley to replace Mr. Thach Bao Khanh as head coach.
Meanwhile, Mr. Thach Bao Khanh was transferred to the role of Technical Director of the club. The decision was made after the afternoon meeting of December 18 of the leadership of The Cong Viettel club.
"After a successful 2023 season when winning the silver medal of the National Cup and the bronze medal of the V.League, this year the force is lacking domestic and foreign players. The change was due to the Board of Directors, I became the Technical Director of the team. I will temporarily rest, but then I will continue with the coaching work," said Mr. Thach Bao Khanh.
"I am very sorry that the current situation of the team is not worrying, but this is football. I work as a coach, I accept assignments from superiors and follow them," the 44-year-old former player added.
After losing to Hanoi FC in round 6, The Cong Viettel is temporarily ranked 9th in V.League 2023-2024 with 8 points.
Coach Thomas Dooley will start work today (December 18), in preparation for his V.League debut against Binh Dinh at Quy Nhon Stadium in the 7th round.
In March 2023, coach Thomas Dooley was appointed as Technical Director of The Cong Viettel.
Mr. Thomas Dooley started his coaching career in 2003, taking on the role of coach and Technical Director at FC Saarbruecken (Germany), American Football Academy. From 2012 to 2018, he was an assistant coach for the U20 team and the US national team.
The 62-year-old coach also led the Philippines national team from 2014 to 2018. He helped the Philippines reach the semi-finals of the AFF Cup 2014 and qualified for the 2019 Asian Cup.
