In the last days of the year of the Dragon, at the largest fishing port in the Central region (Tho Quang fishing port, Da Nang city), dozens of fishing boats are eager to set sail at the end of the year.

Eager to set sail

According to the Da Nang City Statistics Office, in November, the weather in the fishing grounds was unfavorable, with heavy rain and rough seas, forcing fishing boats to anchor at the coast for long periods of time, resulting in a sharp decrease in the output of exploited seafood. In the first 11 months of 2024, the total output of exploited seafood reached 35,280 tons. Therefore, in these last days of the year, many fishermen are eager to go offshore to exploit seafood to serve the consumption and shopping needs of people during the holiday season.

Mr. Le Van Tung, owner of fishing boat TH 93144, is preparing for the last sea trip of 2024 at Tho Quang fishing port. He said that on this sea trip, his boat has more than 10 fishermen, so Mr. Tung has to prepare food, drinking water, and gasoline in advance.

“For this trip, I prepared about 100 kg of rice, 5,000 liters of fresh water, and other foods such as instant noodles, fish sauce, and spices for more than 10 days at sea,” said Le Van Tung.

According to Mr. Tung, going to sea also depends on the weather at sea. If nothing changes, Mr. Tung's trip at the end of this year will last about 1 week to 10 days. Around New Year's Day 2025, Mr. Tung's ship will dock.

Not far away, Mr. Pham Van Hoang, another crew member, was also eagerly preparing his nets, preparing for the year-end offshore trip.

“Working at sea, everyone wants to return home before December 20 to celebrate Tet with their families. Because Tet is about reunion and togetherness,” said Pham Van Hoang.

Mr. Hoang can no longer remember how many years he has been working at sea. He only remembers that every December of the lunar calendar, he is excited about the last sea trips of the year. He and the other sailors all hope for a good sea trip so they can celebrate Tet with their families.

Completely handle the "3 no" fishing boats

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Da Nang City said that as of December 19, the work of handling "3 no" fishing vessels had been completed. Of the 578 "3 no" fishing vessels, 21 had the longest length from 12m to under 15m and 557 had the longest length from 6m to under 12m.

The total number of fishing vessels with the largest length of 6 meters or more in the city is 1,529 fishing vessels and has completed updating all data into the National Fisheries Database. Of which, 65 registered vessels are not qualified for fishing activities (late inspection, not yet granted fishing licenses).

For these 65 vessels, the Fisheries Department, localities, and the Border Guard have worked with each vessel owner to support the issuance of required documents. At the same time, they are required to commit to not operating fishing vessels without complete documents, and not to leave fishing gear or equipment on board.

Assign specific cadres and party members at the grassroots level to monitor and supervise each local fishing vessel, ensuring a clear understanding of the current status of fishing vessel operations and anchorage locations. Timely detect and prevent fishing vessels with suspicious signs of organizing seafood exploitation and promptly report to the Border Guard for handling.

In the coming time, the city will continue to strictly manage to prevent the emergence of fishing vessels without inspection, registration, or fishing licenses. Complete as soon as possible the issuance of documents to 100% of fishing vessels that are still operating and have full documents, and punish 100% of IUU fishing violations.
