Singer Nguyen Huy, also known as “Be Chau”, is a child musical prodigy who became famous in the early 2000s. Coming from a family with an artistic tradition, his parents were the owners of the Cai Luong theater troupe, he started performing with his parents when he was only 3 years old.
Sharing with MC Minh Ngoc, he said: “Those years were both happy and sad, but also very hard. It was called a theater troupe, so it was very hard. Especially during the rainy season, we couldn’t move for a whole month, and there was almost nothing to eat.” The main source of living income came from ticket sales, and after the rains, he and his family stayed at local people’s houses, eating whatever they had, sometimes just cassava.
Nguyen Huy’s artistic path began with self-study through sitting in the “wings” watching the artists perform. The most memorable milestone was when he replaced the main clown in the troupe, because his family could not afford to hire a replacement. Thanks to regularly watching the plays, he memorized every line and song. Despite not having received formal training, he still performed his role excellently and became the main clown in the troupe.
Regarding the famous name “Be Chau”, up to now, he affirmed: “I don’t know where the name Be Chau came from”. Before that, there was a producer who made a music album for him, on the cover of the album was written the name “Be Chau”. At that time, his family was very surprised by this name. “At home, my name is not Be Chau, when performing in troupes, the name on the banner is still “Nguyen Huy (Be Chau)”, not the other way around”, he expressed.
Although he was famous from a young age, Nguyen Huy did not feel too much pressure from his fame, but he had a phobia of crowds. He shared: “Every time I went to a performance, my father often carried me on his shoulder, so that the audience could not reach me. If I walked normally, they would pick, pinch, bite me, my body was always bruised, so I was very scared and haunted.”
This made him afraid of facing crowds, and when performing, he often looked into space instead of making eye contact with the audience.
After a serious accident that tore his ligaments in 2018, Nguyen Huy decided to switch from vibrant dance music to bolero music.
