Meningococcal meningitis is one of the 10 infectious diseases with high mortality rates.
Prof. Dr. Phan Trong Lan - President of the Vietnam Preventive Medicine Association, Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology said: “In Vietnam, invasive meningococcal disease is still a burden on the community. Therefore, leading medical experts have jointly developed the document on Prevention of Meningococcal Disease to systematize data and knowledge about the disease, provide practical recommendations on vaccination, update prevention plans and answer common questions in clinical practice. From there, deploy a proactive prevention strategy to help prevent and control outbreaks.”
MSc. Dr. Nguyen Trong Toan, Deputy Director of the Clinical Trial Center, Pasteur Institute, Ho Chi Minh City, said: “Invasive meningococcal disease is very dangerous and can cause death within 24 hours. The mortality rate is up to 50% if not treated promptly, 20% of survivors suffer from sequelae such as limb amputation, intellectual impairment, and hearing loss.”
Medical experts from the Vietnam Preventive Medicine Association say vaccination is the best way to prevent meningococcal disease.
