Without a transfer, patients can undergo autologous stem cell transplantation in Da Nang

Da Nang Hospital has just successfully performed autologous stem cell transplantation for patients with multiple bone marrow tumors - a criminological cancer disease.

This success marks an important step forward in mastering autologous stem cell transplantation techniques at Da Nang Hospital, opening up effective treatment opportunities for patients right in the locality, reducing the cost burden when having to transfer to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

Recently, doctors at Da Nang Hospital have successfully performed autologous stem cell transplantation for patient Ha Thi A.T. (born in 1978, residing in Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province).

The patient was taken to Da Nang Hospital by his family with a state of general bone pain, unable to walk on his own, then a large bone tumor appeared, encroaching on the entire neck area.

For this disease, to prolong their disease-free life, the most optimal treatment for patients is autologous stem cell transplantation. The patient was chemotherapized to recover the disease and transferred to the transplant area (assolutely sterile isolation area) at the Organ Transplant and Stem Cell Transplant Center for transplant procedures. The transplantation process went smoothly, the patient recovered quickly and was now able to live normally.

Similarly, at the end of March, Da Nang Hospital also successfully performed autologous stem cell transplantation for patient Ho Thi N. (born in 1973, residing in Quang Ngai City, Quang Ngai Province). Previously, Ms. N. was diagnosed with stage 3 bone marrow multiple sclerosis and bone surgery, and received 4 treatment packages, each lasting 3 weeks. After completing the chemotherapy sessions, the patient completely withdrew the disease, so he was indicated for bone marrow transplantation using autologous stem cell transplantation.

The patient was removed from the stem cells by a tricuspid machine by doctors, then transferred to the patient's body via vein transfer. After nearly 20 days of stem cell transfer, the patient was stable, could walk normally and was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong (Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology, Da Nang Hospital) said that bone marrow multiplex is a malicious disease in the blood-forming system, commonly found in middle-aged and elderly people.

The disease progresses silently, but when detected, it is often late with symptoms such as bone pain, fractures, anemia, kidney failure, prolonged infections... Currently, autologous stem cell transplantation is considered one of the most effective treatments for this disease.

This is a method of removing the patient's own stem cells for transplant to the patient, helping to quickly restore the patient's blood circulation system after high-dose chemotherapy, to prevent life-threatening complications. With this method, after only 2-3 weeks, patients with multiple bone marrow tumors can be discharged from the hospital and return to normal life.

Previously, patients in the Central - Central Highlands region often had to move to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to receive treatment with this high technique, which was both expensive and hard, and many cases could not be followed to the end.

However, since 2023, Da Nang Hospital has officially mastered autologous stem cell transplantation techniques and included them in routine treatment, in the future helping patients with malicious blood diseases such as kidney cancer, hyperthyroidism syndrome, multiple myeloma, white blood disease, Hodgkin disease... to be treated promptly right in the locality.
