Garlic is one of the best spices for supporting heart health, says Pittsburgh-based nutritionist Laura M. Ali.
Garlic is rich in antioxidants, such as allicin, which is known to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, making it beneficial for heart health, says nutritionist Veronica Rouse, owner of The Heart Dietitian.
Additionally, garlic has anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is a risk factor for heart disease, so garlic's anti-inflammatory properties may reduce markers of inflammation and help protect the heart.
Garlic consumption can improve the flexibility of arteries, allowing blood to flow more easily and may also help lower blood pressure. Not only that, garlic can also limit oxidative damage to the lining of blood vessels and may reduce plaque buildup, adds nutritionist Laura M. Ali.
