Below are 6 benefits of dhokla shared by nutritionist Gauri Anand (India).

1. Low in calories

One of the most important benefits of dhokla for weight loss is its low calorie count. Made mainly from fermented rice and chickpea flour, it helps keep the calorie content low. One piece of dhokla (58 grams) contains 152 calories, making it a perfect snack.

2. Improve metabolism

Fermented foods like dhokla contain beneficial bacteria that promote a healthy gut microflora. A healthy gut microbiome is associated with better metabolism, digestion, and nutrient absorption. By improving gut health, dhokla may indirectly support a more efficient metabolism, which is beneficial for weight loss.

3. High protein content

Protein helps build and repair tissue, maintain muscle mass and helps keep you full longer. Dhokla contains chickpea flour, which is a good source of protein. A serving of dhokla can provide 5.7 grams of protein, which helps curb hunger.

4. Rich in fiber

One piece of dhokla provides 2.5 grams of fiber which aids digestion, promotes satiety and helps regulate blood sugar levels.

5. Low fat

Dhokla is steamed, which means it does not require oil or too much fat to prepare. So, it is low in calories compared to other packaged snacks. By incorporating dhokla into your diet, you can enjoy a low-fat snack that still provides essential nutrients.

6. Supports digestion

Despite being low in calories and fat, dhokla is rich in essential nutrients. It provides essential vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, iron, magnesium and folic acid, which can improve your overall health. Not to mention, dhokla is also rich in fiber, which makes digestion easier by promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation.
