Women often have many mood swings especially during menstruation or pregnancy, why does this happen?

What is mood swing?

According to clinical psychologist Rituparna Ghosh, mood swings are sudden, dramatic changes in a person's emotional state. Mood swings can be rapid and often unpredictable, ranging from feeling extremely happy or excited to feeling very sad, irritable, or depressed.

Mood swings in women are characterized by the expression of different emotions in a short period of time. For example, they may feel happy but then suddenly feel depressed, frustrated and angry soon after without any good reason.

Various factors such as health, life problems are attributed to cause mood swings in women.

What causes mood swings in women?

Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes can cause mood swings. This often happens during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause in women. These are times when a woman's body goes through major hormonal changes that can lead to frequent mood swings.

Mental health conditions: Bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety are common reasons for changes in a person's mood. A person with bipolar disorder may be very happy and energetic at one point but suddenly switch to the opposite state, feeling very sad and depressed.

Health problems: Some health problems related to the thyroid gland can lead to mood swings. Other health problems such as diabetes or heart disease can also cause constant mood swings, especially in women.
