Surgery to remove 14cm long worm from patient's eye

Thanh Hoa - Upon examination, doctors discovered a 14cm long worm in the patient's eye. Immediately after, the doctors performed surgery.

On December 24, information from Thanh Hoa General Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just performed surgery to remove a 14cm long worm from under the conjunctiva of a patient's eye.

According to a representative of Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital, patient N.N.B. (68 years old, residing in Sam Son City) was admitted to the hospital with discomfort in his left eye with symptoms such as: foreign body sensation, obstruction, burning, itching, continuous watery eyes accompanied by a feeling of blurred vision.

During the clinical examination and microscopic examination of the eye, doctors discovered a transparent parasite, shaped like a filarial worm, 14cm long, 0.5mm in diameter, moving in the temporal region under the conjunctiva of the eyeball.

Determining that this was an adult worm parasite, doctors performed emergency surgery and removed the 14cm long worm from the patient's conjunctiva.

Mr. Pham Doan Thiem - Head of the Ophthalmology Department, Thanh Hoa General Hospital said that the worm removed from the patient's eye could be conjunctival filariasis or dragon worm. After removing the worm from the eye, the patient's condition improved and all the unpleasant eye symptoms disappeared.
