Da Nang - Ms. L.T.D (49 years old) discovered she had a uterine fibroid 4 years ago and ignored early examination and treatment, causing the tumor to grow rapidly.

According to Tam Tri Da Nang General Hospital, the hospital has just successfully performed surgery to remove a uterine fibroid weighing up to 5 kg from a 49-year-old female patient. This is the largest fibroid ever recorded at the hospital.

Since 2021, the patient was found to have a uterine fibroid with symptoms of pain and compression but not severe, so she lived in "harmony" with the tumor and did not have regular check-ups.

Over the past year, the patient's belly was protruding like she was pregnant, the tumor grew rapidly, her body was thin and pale, abdominal pain, frequent urination, and constipation appeared frequently, so the patient came to Tam Tri Da Nang General Hospital for examination.

Dr. Nguyen Cao Quy - Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology - Tam Tri Da Nang General Hospital said: "In this case, the tumor was too large, occupying the entire abdomen from the lower abdomen up to the two ribs like a full-term pregnancy, so the doctors consulted and decided to perform open surgery to remove the entire uterus, leaving 2 adnexa.

In addition, the patient had anemia and was transfused with 2 units of packed red blood cells 350ml before surgery and 1 unit of red blood cells during surgery.

After nearly 2 hours, the surgical team completely removed the 5kg tumor. After the surgery, the patient's health stabilized, his body felt lighter, and he was able to eat and drink normally.

Dr. Nguyen Cao Quy added: "Uterine fibroids are usually benign tumors but need to be examined and treated early to avoid progression and dangerous complications. Therefore, doctors also recommend that women should go for a check-up immediately when they detect any unusual signs.

Women of all ages should have regular gynecological check-ups every 6 months - 1 year to detect gynecological diseases early, thereby having appropriate monitoring and treatment directions.
