The patient came to the hospital with acute pain in the scrotum. Fortunately, thanks to awareness of testicular torsion through the media, the patient came to the hospital within 3 hours of the onset of symptoms, helping to save the testicle in time.
The surgery showed that the patient's testicle was twisted twice around the spermatic cord, leading to blood vessel obstruction. Immediately afterwards, the doctors untwisted and fixed the testicle, helping it to become rosy again and blood to circulate well. Currently, the patient's health has recovered and there is no more pain, but the recovery of the testicle still needs to be monitored.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang, President of the Vietnam Association of Gender Medicine, Director of the Andrology Center of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that testicular torsion is one of the common male medical emergencies, accounting for about 20% of cases of acute scrotal pain, often occurring in men from 12 to 18 years old, but can occur at any age.
Testicular torsion occurs when the testicle rotates excessively around the spermatic cord, causing acute obstruction of the blood vessel system. If not treated within the first 6 hours, this condition can lead to testicular necrosis, seriously affecting fertility and quality of life.
Experts recommend that any unexplained pain in the scrotum or lower abdomen should be considered as a testicular cause. Early referral to the hospital and timely treatment are important in preserving reproductive health and function. This is a strong reminder of the importance of raising awareness of male medical emergencies and not ignoring any unusual symptoms in the genital area.
