About a week before being hospitalized, while working in the fields, Mr. T was accidentally stabbed in the thigh by a thorn. Thinking that it was just a minor scratch, Mr. T was subjective and did not handle it. A few days later, Mr. T's thighs began to swell and hurt, his skin turned black and showed many blisters. As the condition became more and more serious, the patient rushed to see a doctor.
At a lower-level hospital, the doctor diagnosed the patient with cellulitis, severe septic shock and immediately transferred him to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
At the Intensive Care Center, the patient was recorded in critical condition, multiple organ failure, black necrosis in the right thigh, with many large blisters, some up to 10 x 10 cm. Patients must take high doses of antibiotics, transport blood vessels, continuously filter blood and use a ventilator.
Doctor Mac Duy Hung, Intensive Care Center, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said: The patient has had gout for many years but has not been followed up on proper treatment, the patient's resistance is weaker than normal. Just one non-barrier wound on the skin has caused infection to spread, with a very high risk of death.
After more than 10 days of intensive treatment, the patient was out of danger and had to be taken off a ventilator. The necroscopic thigh area was cleaned, and the cell tissues gradually recovered.
According to Dr. Hung, the patient has necrotizing colitis (cellulitis) - a particularly dangerous form of infection. Bacteria can penetrate through open wounds, secrete toxins that destroy the skin, subcutaneous and muscular organizes, making patients susceptible to septic shock, multiple organ failure with a very high mortality rate if not given timely emergency care.
People with weak resistance such as the elderly, diabetes, cirrhosis, alcoholism, long-term use of corticosteroids... are more susceptible to bacteria. When working in a dirty environment, you need to protect it to avoid scratches. If there is a wound, get disinfected immediately and see a doctor early if there are unusual signs" - Dr. Hung recommended.
