The match between Leicester City and Southampton in round 35 of the Premier League on the night of April 4 had to be postponed in the 21st minute after referee David Webb suffered a head injury in an accidental collision with Jordan Ayew.
While Webb was on the pitch, there were a few players who had not yet recognized the situation and continued the game. Jamie Vardy of Leicester ran over, sat next to the referee and blew the whistle that was still in his hand. This interesting moment was widely shared by fans on social networks.
Vardy then avoided taking the referee to the side for medical staff to treat him. The severity of the injury has worried the players.
It is worth mentioning that this was the first Premier League match in the career of this black king. After 5 minutes of treatment on the field, Webb was unable to stand up but could walk off the field to continue treatment.
He was replaced by 4th referee Sam barrott after the match was postponed for 11 minutes.
In the end, Leicester won 2-0 against bottom-placed Southampton, but they were officially relegated 2 rounds ago.
After the match, Vardy told BBC Sport: "I saw Southampton attack the left wing when the referee fell down, I thought I needed to blow the whistle to stop the game."
Leicester head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy said at his post-match press conference:
"I feel sorry for the referee. He hit Jordan Ayew, and that was not easy. Vardy blew the whistle to help him. I hope he's okay."
