Early this morning, the 12 big teams in Europe - including the 6 English giants ( Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham), 3 Spanish clubs (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid) and 3 Italian clubs (Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan) have officially announced plans to establish a new tournament called the European Super League.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was elected as president of the Super League executive committee. His two "dezen generals" are Juventus president Andrea Agnelli and Man Utd co-owner Joel Glazer.
In the announcement of the establishment of a tournament worth 6 billion USD, the Super League also announced the competition format. Specifically, the Super League will include 20 clubs, including 15 founding clubs and 5 other clubs selected based on the competition results of each season.
Currently, the Super League has the 12 founding clubs and plans to invite 3 more clubs. The two giants PSG and Bayern Munich refused to participate for various reasons, but it is expected to be convinced by the Super League in the near future.
The new season of the Super League will start in August every year, with matches taking place in midweek, without conflicts with national championships. Therefore, clubs in the Super League do not need to leave their domestic league.
The 20 participating clubs will be divided into 2 groups, competing in a round-robin of home and away matches. The top 3 teams in each group will qualify directly for the quarter-finals. The 4th and 5th teams will play the play-off for the remaining 2 tickets. From the quarter-finals, the teams will compete in a knockout round after 2 matches. The final round has only one match taking place at the end of May.
Currently, UEFA and its member federations are strongly opposing the Super League and threatening to impose heavy penalties on clubs participating in this tournament. UEFA's announcement affirms that teams participating in the European Super League will be banned from competing in all domestic tournaments, Europe as well as the world. Meanwhile, FIFA expressed its solidarity and full support for its affiliated federations. The most powerful football management agency on the planet confirmed that the players will be banned from playing for the national team, and may not be able to participate in the 2022 World Cup.
