In the summer of 2024, striker Mason Greenwood officially left Man United, ending the scandal of violence against his girlfriend. Arriving at Marseille, this star had an extremely impressive start with a record of scoring 5 goals in just 3 matches.
Greenwood's rising form has led many to believe he deserves to be in the England team , because since the scandal, the former Man United star has not returned to play for the Three Lions. Partly because of his form, partly because public opinion in the Foggy Land is always very strict.
Ahead of England's match against Ireland, new manager Lee Carsley once again cast doubt on Greenwood. He was quoted by Metro: "To be honest, Mason is not a player we can consider. I know his situation, but he will not be considered for the national team."
However, former player Chris Waddle expressed hope that Greenwood will return to the England team, possibly in the future.
“He’s a very good player,” he said. “He wears the No 10 shirt and England seem to be producing a lot of good No 10s these days. He’s developed really quickly and scored a lot of goals for his new team. I think the England manager will take note of that.
“We all know the French league is quite strong, but it is not as strong as the other three or four leagues in Europe at the moment, you have to take that into account. It is not as strong as the Premier League, La Liga or Bundesliga. But you have to appreciate what he did for Marseille, when he scored goals and played well.”
In August, The Sun reported that Jamaica were making an approach for Greenwood, as he was eligible to play for the Caribbean island nation. If England continue to ignore him, this would be the only chance for the Marseille star to make his mark on the international stage.
