On the afternoon of July 9, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held a draw for the 2022 U23 Asian qualifiers. A total of 42 participating teams are divided into 2 regions: the West (23 teams) and the East (20 teams).
As a result, the U23 Vietnam team is in Group I with U23 Myanmar, U23 Taiwan (China) and U23 Hong Kong (China). U23 Vietnam is the number 1 seed of the group and is considered the number 1 candidate for the ticket to the next round. The matches will take place in a round-robin format in Taiwan (China) from October 23 to October 31, 2021.
In total, the 2022 U23 Asian qualifiers have 11 groups. The 11 first-placed teams and the 4 best second-placed teams will qualify for the finals, held in Uzbekistan from June 1 to June 19, 2022.
In history, U23 Vietnam has regularly participated in the U23 Asian Cup Finals 3 consecutive times in 2016, 2018 and 2020. In 2018, U23 Vietnam won the runner-up position after losing 1-2 to U23 Uzbekistan in the final match. That is also the first achievement of coach Park Hang-seo in Vietnamese football. In the 2020 tournament, U23 Vietnam was eliminated from the group stage.
