According to market research firm IDC, more than 39.6 million tablets were sold globally from July to September this year.
This is much higher than the same period last year (32.9 million units). 2023 saw a gloomy time for this market, especially when Apple did not introduce any new iPad models - the first time since 2010.
In 2024, Apple launched two new iPad Pro models, both with OLED displays and both equipped with the M4 chipset.
Also released this year are two 2024 iPad Air models both equipped with the M2 chipset.
Apple has added a new 13-inch variant to the iPad Air 2024. Last October 2024, the "apple house" also introduced the iPad mini model equipped with the A17 Pro chip.
With a series of new products, iPad still leads the tablet market when Apple shipped 12.6 million units in the third quarter of this year.
This figure is only slightly higher than the 12.4 million units in the same period last year. However, in terms of market share, Apple has decreased from 37.7% in the third quarter of 2023 to 31.7% in the same period of 2024.
Samsung also had a good quarter for tablets, selling 7.1 million units, compared to 6 million units in the same period last year.
Samsung released new premium tablets like the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S10+ with AI features during the quarter. Samsung's Q3 2024 sales were driven by the low-cost Galaxy Tab A9 models.
Like Apple, Samsung's overall global market share falls from 18.2% in Q3 2023 to 17.9% in the same period in 2024. Part of the reason is the rise of Amazon.
Amazon sold 4.6 million tablets from July 1 to September 30, 2024, up from 2.2 million in the same period last year.
Amazon's global tablet market share increased from 6.6% to 11.6%, partly thanks to the upgrade of the Fire HD 8 model, which uses AI (artificial intelligence) technology.
Huawei ranked fourth in tablet shipments with 3.3 million units, representing a remarkable 44.1% year-on-year growth. The company's global tablet market share increased from 6.9% in the third quarter of last year to 8.2% this year.
Lenovo ranked 5th when they sold 3 million tablets, slightly higher than 2.6 million in the same period last year.
