Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, in Ea Tieu commune, Cu Kuin district (Dak Lak) happily said that his family has 6 sao of coffee that are ripening.
Because there is no labor to selectively pick ripe fruit, he waits until the coffee garden is almost ripe before harvesting all at once. Many households around his coffee garden have started harvesting.
The price of green coffee beans is currently at 120,000 VND/kg. Mr. Nam said that this is the highest price ever and is 3 times higher than the same period last year.
“At the beginning of the 2023 crop, green coffee beans cost 40,000 VND/kg, but now they have increased to 120,000 VND/kg. Another good thing is that fertilizer prices have not increased as much as in previous years, so farmers can save on investment costs,” Mr. Nam shared.
Mr. Nam estimates that his family's 6 sao of coffee will yield about 1.2 - 1.5 tons. If the coffee price remains unchanged at 120,000 VND/kg, his family will earn more than 140 million VND.
Meanwhile, the family of Mr. Le Van Quan, in Ea Kao commune, Buon Ma Thuot city (Dak Lak) has started the coffee harvest. Because the garden was heavily affected by the recent drought, the fruit is not uniform and not abundant.
Mr. Quan added that currently, traders come to the garden and farm to buy fresh coffee at 20,000 VND/kg. Coffee is expensive, so Mr. Quan is very happy. Mr. Quan also often visits the garden to watch for coffee theft. On the other hand, Mr. Quan collects the coffee as it ripens, avoiding dropping and loss.
"If I wait for all the fruits to ripen at once, the ones that come out first and are ripe first will fall and be lost. Therefore, I decided to pick selectively, even though it takes more effort," said Mr. Quan.
According to statistics from the authorities, Dak Lak province has more than 213,000 hectares of coffee, accounting for the largest area of industrial crops in the province and is the coffee capital of Vietnam.
Mr. Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association (Dak Lak) said that coffee prices are at a high level, creating excitement for farmers.
With this price, coffee growers earn higher profits than in previous years. This creates more motivation for them to feel secure and stick with coffee trees.
