Quang Binh - Lunar New Year 2025 is approaching, farmers in the area are urgently taking care of vegetable and flower crops, ensuring sufficient supply for the Tet market.

Le Thuy - the big vegetable granary of Quang Binh

Le Thuy District (Quang Binh Province) is considered one of the major vegetable granaries of the locality, with famous communes such as Hong Thuy, Thanh Thuy, Cam Thuy, Hung Thuy. Not only providing daily vegetables, this area also plays an important role in ensuring the source of green vegetables to serve the market during the Lunar New Year, both inside and outside the province. However, the flood in October caused severe damage to many vegetable areas in low-lying areas.

After the flood receded, people quickly resumed production. Drainage, land preparation, and seeding were urgent tasks to promptly plant the Tet vegetable crop. On the sandy land along National Highway 1A, Mr. Hoang Quoc Toan, a farmer in Hong Thuy commune, completed the work of making beds and fertilizing to grow vegetables.

He shared that due to the impact of storm No. 6, this year people planted vegetables later than usual. Some vegetables will be harvested right on Tet holiday, while others will be sold after Tet if they are not available. Farmers use organic manure instead of chemicals to ensure food quality and safety.

According to statistics, Le Thuy district has planted about 200 hectares of vegetables to serve the Lunar New Year. Popular vegetables include onions, green peppers, green beans, bitter melon, lettuce, and many other types of vegetables. The application of the clean vegetable production model in the organic direction is being focused on by the people.

Mr. Vo Minh Net - Head of the Hoa Luat Nam Clean Vegetable Production Cooperative said that thanks to production according to VietGAP standards, our clean vegetable products are trusted by customers inside and outside the province. Thanks to that, the product value is higher, the income from each hectare of vegetable cultivation can reach 150-200 million VND per year.

Implement cold-proof plans

Not only Le Thuy vegetable area, flower growers in Quang Long ward (Ba Don town), known as the "flower capital" of Quang Binh, are also busy taking care of and protecting flowers for Tet.

Flower growers here are always careful in every step, from seedling cultivation, care, pest control, to adjusting the light and watering so that the flowers bloom in time for Tet. Despite the erratic weather at the end of the year, farmers are still on duty in the fields day and night, even using lamps to guard against pests.

Mr. Phung Tay Do, a flower grower in Truong Son residential group, said that in addition to traditional yellow chrysanthemums, we also grow high-value flowers such as lilies and gladiolus. Although flower growing is much harder than rice growing, the productivity and profit are superior, especially during Tet.

Despite facing competition from imported flowers from other places, Quang Long flower village still maintains the market's trust thanks to its quality and unique characteristics.

The extreme weather at the end of the year with prolonged cold and rainy spells is a big concern for farmers in Quang Binh. Many vegetable fields are suffering from waterlogging and slow growth. Farmers have to increase fertilization and care, hoping to harvest vegetables and flowers before Tet.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Binh province informed that the sector has guided farmers on measures to combat cold, prevent pests and diseases, and encouraged the planting of high-quality and high-value crops. At the same time, the sector has also disbursed funds to support natural disaster recovery, provide seeds and materials to ensure the supply of vegetables and food for the Tet market.
