Finding solutions for the durian industry in Can Tho to develop sustainably

Can Tho - The workshop was held to find solutions to remove difficulties and sustainable development strategies for the Can Tho durian industry.

On August 21, the Farmers' Association of Can Tho City in coordination with the School of Agriculture (Can Tho University) organized a workshop on "Solutions to develop durian products for export quality".

According to information provided at the workshop, in recent years, durian trees in Can Tho have been developed and invested in with a total area of 12,944 hectares, ranking 3rd among the city's fruit trees, after jackfruit and banana.

Currently, over 86% of Ri 6 durian varieties are grown in gardens. The widely harvested crop season is from the end of January to July and November to December. Of which, concentrated in April - June, accounting for over 90% of the area.

Most of the durian output in the city is consumed through the purchasing system of local traders using the purchasing method in the gardens of each household. Currently, the city has 85 cooperatives/cooperative groups/peasant groups with an area of 1,901 hectares. In addition, there are 10 companies linking consumption with cooperatives/THT/peasant groups to produce durian for export to China, ... with a total area of 836 hectares participating in the linkage in communes and wards of the city.

Mr. Nguyen Van Su - Member of the City Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the City, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Can Tho City - said that since the Chinese market opened the door for main imports of Vietnamese durian, export turnover has grown rapidly, making durian a bright spot for our country's agricultural sector.

However, going with opportunities is always a challenge. Chinese consumers are increasingly demanding on quality, plant quarantine and food safety and hygiene. Therefore, from farmers, the agricultural export business community, to authorities need to avoid the psychology of being hasty and subjective; must do a good job of reorganizing production, associated with standardizing the production process; build growing area codes, packaging facility codes, traceability to ensure management of product quality from the original;...

At the workshop, scientists and experienced experts from the Institute and School provided more than 300 delegates who are farmers, cooperatives, technology transfer businesses with scientific information on the causes of Cadimi deposits in soil, water and farming processes, to solutions for the use of fertilizers, pesticides to ensure safety and effectiveness, as well as practical recommendations to meet the requirements of the import market... Thereby, contributing to removing difficulties, towards a sustainable development strategy for the durian industry in Can Tho.
