In early May 2025, the Russian scientific research vessel "Oparin Doctor" docked at the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang. The Ship is currently preparing for a nearly month-long survey of the East Sea with the participation of 30 Vietnamese and Russian scientists.
This is the 9th joint marine survey within the framework of cooperation between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Far East Institute - Russian Academy of Sciences (FEBRAS), taking place from May 1 to 25, 2025.
For nearly a month, 30 scientists - including 20 Vietnamese - will collect samples in coastal areas and deep ocean areas in southern Vietnam. The survey locations have been agreed upon by both sides in advance.
The main goal of the survey is to update and supplement data on marine biodiversity, assess environmental quality, marine life resources and the ability to detect potential biological compounds for biomedical research.
At the same time, the team will also analyze the level of marine pollution, especially the presence of microplastics, organics that are difficult to decompose, and develop remote data to serve environmental monitoring and aquaculture.
According to the plan, the survey results will be announced at the Scientific Conference held on May 27 at the Institute of Oceanography, Nha Trang City.
Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha - Director of the Institute of Oceanography - said that this is the 5th time the Oparin Institute ship has arrived at Nha Trang port since 2005.
She emphasized that international surveys like this not only help enhance research capacity but also provide an important practical training environment for young Vietnamese researchers.
Many key officials of the Institute of Oceanography have participated in surveys on the Oparin Institute ship and have matured from those experiences, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Viet Ha shared.
This survey continues to demonstrate the efforts of sustainable cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation in the field of marine research, contributing significantly to the marine science data warehouse of the region and the world.
