Join hands to contribute to greening the island district
Recently, activities such as weeding, picking leaves, and fertilizing medicinal plants and flowers along roads and vacant lots in Con Dao have taken place every Saturday and have been widely supported by local people.
This is an activity to join hands to create a "herbal medicine garden to green the garbage spot", initiated by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Con Dao district, in coordination with organizations since June 2024. Thereby raising people's awareness of preserving a green and clean living environment, contributing to the realization of the Project "Research and application of the circular economic model to serve sustainable socio-economic development of Con Dao district in the period of 2022-2025, with a vision to 2030".
Ms. Huynh Thi Thanh Lien - Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Con Dao district - said that the model of "herbal medicine garden covering garbage points" has contributed to eliminating 12 landfills, creating gardens on an area of over 5,000m², with thousands of medicinal plants and flowers. Contributing to creating more green areas to improve air quality, as well as providing medicinal herbs, ornamental flowers, and green vegetables for people.
Along with the above activities, Con Dao has implemented a series of meaningful programs to classify and collect plastic waste and protect the environment such as: "Fly lightly to Con Dao" program; "Green Con Dao Festival" program; "Green gift basket" program...
Significant reduction in plastic waste and burning of votive offerings in Con Dao
To develop green and sustainably, Con Dao urgently needs to reduce plastic waste because there are still limitations in collecting, processing and recycling plastic waste.
Towards that goal, many units have been implementing practical activities to protect the environment such as: organizing the collection of coastal waste, marine waste, replacing disposable plastic materials with long-lasting, environmentally friendly items... combined with propaganda to raise awareness of environmental protection for people and tourists.
For example, the campaign "Say no to burning votive offerings" launched by Con Dao in 2023, with the determination of the local government and the consensus of the people, has achieved many positive results. Up to now, 99% of flower baskets and offering trays at relic sites have met the criteria of "Green offering baskets", without votive offerings and non-destructible materials, helping Con Dao's environment "turn green" significantly after a short time of implementation.
"Many propaganda models and solutions have been deployed and have had a positive impact, gradually changing the behavior and reducing the use of disposable plastic products by people and tourists, contributing to better environmental protection," said Mr. Tran Thanh Huyen - Vice Chairman of Con Dao District People's Committee.
In the coming time, Con Dao continues to call on the community and tourists to maintain environmental protection awareness in all activities, to always be a green, clean, beautiful and sustainable destination.
