Hanoi – To ensure environmental sanitation during Tet, the city has increased street sweeping, watering, waste collection, transportation and treatment.

According to calculations by the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the amount of waste in Hanoi will increase sharply during the New Year and Lunar New Year. It is estimated that the total amount of domestic waste generated in the city and transferred to concentrated solid waste treatment areas is about 6,800-7,500 tons/day.

To solve the problem of waste treatment, Hanoi City has directed the synchronous implementation of many solutions, such as calling for investment and socializing waste treatment works and projects using modern technology.

At the same time, a representative of Hanoi Urban Environment Company Limited (Urenco) said that currently, the collection and transportation of waste generated during the day in districts has reached 100%, and in districts and towns from 95 to 100%. At the same time, localities such as Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da, Hai Ba Trung, and Nam Tu Liem have piloted waste classification at source and achieved positive results.

However, during the New Year and Lunar New Year, due to the high consumption demand of the capital's residents, a large amount of solid waste is generated from shopping and house cleaning activities, so ensuring environmental sanitation, collecting, transporting, receiving and treating solid waste becomes a big challenge for the city.

In fact, in recent years, the amount of waste during Tet has increased by about 40% compared to normal days. It is expected that in the days leading up to Tet this year, the amount of waste will increase significantly, especially from December 23 to 29, 2025. At its peak on December 29, the amount of solid waste generated can reach 9,000 tons/day (an increase of 150-200% compared to normal days).

At the Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex (Soc Son district), the average amount of waste received per day is currently about 6,400 tons. It is expected that during the 4 peak days, from December 31, 2024 to January 3, 2025 (the time of New Year's Day 2025), the expected amount of waste received will increase to 6,800 tons compared to normal days.

From February 19 to 28 (the time of Lunar New Year 2025), the expected amount of waste received will increase by 8,000 tons compared to normal days.

At Xuan Son Solid Waste Treatment Area (Son Tay town and Ba Vi district), the average amount of waste received per day is about 770 tons, during the New Year holiday, about 850 tons will be generated per day. At the peak of 10 days (from February 19 to 28), the average generated volume is from 800 to 1,000 tons per day.

A representative of the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment said that to ensure the Tet atmosphere is always joyful and fresh, plans for environmental sanitation, collection, and especially waste reception and treatment have been implemented early.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Cuong - Director of Hanoi Center for Natural Resources and Environment Engineering, the center has actively coordinated the implementation of operations at Xuan Son Solid Waste Treatment Area and Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex, ensuring continuous and uninterrupted waste reception during the New Year and Lunar New Year 2025.

At the same time, develop an operation plan, arrange adequate equipment and chemical supplies, increase 100% of the workforce on duty 24/7 to receive and safely and smoothly process waste, ensure environmental sanitation inside and outside the treatment areas; coordinate with local authorities to ensure labor safety, security, order, traffic, fire and explosion prevention and fighting.

Regularly and suddenly at the site of the city's concentrated solid waste treatment areas to count the volume, evaluate the effectiveness of solid waste reception and treatment, resolutely not let incidents occur to ensure solid waste treatment operations and ensure environmental sanitation, keeping the capital Hanoi green, clean and beautiful, especially during the New Year and Lunar New Year 2025.
