Nghe An - The Department of Education and Training and the provincial Education Trade Union launched a campaign to encourage students to "say no to phones during class".

On October 14, Dr. Dang Van Hai - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Chairman of the Education Trade Union of Nghe An province - said that the Department of Education and Training and the Education Trade Union of Nghe An province have just coordinated to organize and implement the campaign "Nghe An schools say no to phones during class".

The campaign aims for students from primary to high school in the province not to use phones during regular classes, extra classes at school, and even during recess.

For special classes, lessons, group activities or in special situations, the school and teachers decide on the use of phones for students.

The campaign aims to educate and raise students' awareness of the responsibility of using phones, increase interaction and direct communication; reduce addiction to video games and social networks; support the development of students' psychology, personality, physical health and learning outcomes, thereby improving the quality of comprehensive education.

It is expected that in October 2024, the Department of Education and Training and the Education Trade Union will sign and issue a joint document to deploy the campaign and organize a launching ceremony to implement it throughout the industry.

“The education sector will work closely with parents to achieve high consensus in managing students’ phone usage. The campaign must be organized and implemented vigorously throughout the sector, with the spirit of “Educating students with all affection and love” - Dr. Dang Van Hai said.

According to the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, the issue of students using social networks and smart devices in schools is revealing many shortcomings, negatively affecting the building of an educational environment and the development process of students.

Since 2020, the Ministry of Education and Training has banned students from using mobile phones while studying in class without the teacher's permission.

Currently, many countries in the world such as France, the Netherlands, Greece... have banned students from using cell phones in schools.

In 2023, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommended banning the use of mobile phones for students, especially at the secondary level.
