According to the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, from January 1, 2025, domestic solid waste will be classified at the source (each household) and then collected, gathered, and transported.

According to the roadmap, penalties for cases of not classifying waste at source will be implemented no later than December 31, 2024. The regulations clearly state: fines from VND 500,000 - VND 1,000,000 for households and individuals who do not classify domestic solid waste according to regulations; do not use packaging to contain domestic solid waste according to regulations.

Talking to reporters about the situation of generation, classification and treatment of domestic solid waste at source in Can Tho City, Can Tho Urban Joint Stock Company informed that the amount of domestic waste generated in the city in 2022 is about 653.90 tons/day on average, in 2023 about 680.90 tons/day and in the first 9 months of 2024 about 686 tons/day.

The collection and transportation work of districts is being carried out quite well. Up to now, the rate of collected and treated domestic solid waste in urban areas of the whole city has reached 98.78%, and in rural areas it has reached 74.58%.

Regarding waste classification at source, Can Tho City Department of Natural Resources and Environment has coordinated with 04 districts including Ninh Kieu, Binh Thuy, Cai Rang and Thoi Lai to pilot waste classification at source since September 2017, in which domestic solid waste is divided into 03 types: non-burnable waste, hazardous waste and burnable waste.

According to the assessment of the classification of the collection and transportation unit, people participated in the classification in the initial stage after each propaganda and guidance period of the locality. However, this habit has not been maintained; the work still faces many difficulties because the collection and transportation system is not yet stable; districts are still in the stage of arranging and completing the collection and transportation system;...

"We think that to implement the new policy well, we need a legal framework, guidelines and resources for implementation, including infrastructure investment, specific regulations and capital sources. In particular, we need to continuously promote it to avoid forgetting over time" - Mr. Nguyen Phuc Nhu - Deputy Director of Can Tho Urban Joint Stock Company - informed.
