Can Tho - The City People's Committee has just reported on HIV/AIDS prevention and control work in 2024 and tasks in 2025 in the city.

According to the report, the cumulative number of people infected with HIV detected with registered residence in Can Tho City is 7,732; of which 2,782 people died, the number of people infected with HIV still being managed is 4,950 people.

In 2024, the number of people infected with HIV with registered residence in Can Tho City was discovered to be 233; of which 61 people died and there were no cases of AIDS. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of people infected with HIV decreased by 44 people and the number of deaths increased by 38 people.

Characteristics of people detected with HIV in 2024 are mainly transmitted through sexual intercourse (96.6%); concentrated in the 16-29 age group accounting for 41.6%, the 30-39 age group accounting for 32.2%. Of which, the subjects are self-employed workers accounting for 52.4%, workers accounting for 16.3% and students accounting for 12.9%.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) remain the main risk group, accounting for 60.5% of the city's total number of HIV-infected people detected.

The results of the implementation of the target of 90% of people infected with HIV knowing their infection status reached 94.2%; the target of 90% of people diagnosed with HIV receiving ARV treatment reached 97.6%; the target of 90% of people infected with HIV receiving ARV treatment with viral load below the suppression threshold reached 98.9%.

Can Tho City has been strengthening public health response activities to HIV infection clusters, contributing to controlling HIV infection in the community. However, HIV/AIDS prevention and control work still faces difficulties and challenges.

Accordingly, Can Tho is the economic, political, cultural and social center of the Mekong Delta region, attracting many high-risk groups from neighboring localities to live, study, play, and entertain... so it is under a lot of pressure and a heavy burden of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The work of screening and managing people infected with HIV is facing difficulties because infected people declare incorrect personal information, and the data of people infected with HIV on the HIV INFO system has not been linked with treatment data.

HIV infection is mainly through sexual intercourse, with the target group getting younger and increasing in the MSM group, this group has complex sociological characteristics and risk behaviors, which is the main trend for the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country in general and in Can Tho City in particular in the coming time. This is also one of the major challenges to achieve the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
