On April 9, the Traffic Safety Committee of Kon Tum province said that in the first quarter of 2025, the whole province recorded 38 traffic accidents, killing 34 people and injuring 20 others.
Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of accidents decreased by 4, the number of deaths increased by 3 people and the number of injuries decreased by 12 people.
The localities with the most accidents include: Dak To district (9 cases, 9 deaths, 5 injuries); Dak Ha district (6 cases, 6 deaths, 4 injuries); Kon Tum city (6 cases, 5 deaths, 1 injury); Kon Ray district (5 cases, 4 deaths, 4 injuries).
According to the assessment of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, the main cause of accidents is limited awareness of people's compliance with traffic laws.
Many incidents occurred due to drivers speeding, reckless overtaking, not controlling the speed, lacking observation or driving after consuming alcohol.
Notably, traffic accidents in rural areas account for 50% of the total number of cases and deaths.
The Provincial Traffic Safety Committee said that in addition to factors related to awareness and consciousness of traffic participants, the terrain with many steep passes, harsh weather conditions such as prolonged rain, dense fog... also increase the risk of traffic insecurity.
In addition, a part of the population, especially adolescents, still regularly violates traffic laws despite being propagandized and disseminated the law.
Recently, the Ministry of Construction has directed the Vietnam Road Administration to coordinate with the Kon Tum Provincial People's Committee and related units to handle black spots and potential traffic accident spots.
In 2025, the Ministry of Construction will spend 104.5 billion VND to eliminate traffic black spots on the Ho Chi Minh Road through Kon Tum.
