Why Australian tourists increasingly prefer Vietnam tourism over other countries

Vietnam is rapidly emerging as a particularly popular destination for Australian tourists, with growth rates far exceeding many tourist destinations in the region.

According to data from the Australian Statistical Office, the number of visitors from this country to Vietnam in the first quarter of this year increased by 54% compared to the same period in 2019.

The report of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism recorded Australia as 8th in the 10 largest tourist sending markets of Vietnam in the first 6 months of 2025, with more than 276,000 arrivals.

InsideAsia Tours travel agency recorded a 46% increase in direct tour bookings in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, news.com.au reported.

Ms. Nicole Newport - Australian sales director of InsideAsia Tours - commented: "This is clear evidence that Vietnam is quickly becoming a top choice for Australian tourists".

She said that Vietnam's strengths are its location near Australia and its diversity in experiences - from cities rich in identity, bustling traditional markets to majestic natural landscapes.

This richness makes a trip to Vietnam feel like you are exploring many countries in just one journey, she said.

In addition to cultural factors, impressive natural scenery is also an attraction for tourists. Data from the Klook tourism platform shows that the number of hotel bookings in Vietnam from March to June this year has increased by 250% compared to the same period in 2024; the number of bookings for experience tours also increased by 170%.

Vietnam used to be a little-known destination for Australian tourists, but that is changing with new routes and an increasingly developed tourism infrastructure, said Henry Hooper, CEO of the Atlantic Klook.

Another factor that makes Vietnam popular with Australian tourists is the reasonable cost.

According to Travel Money Oz, the Australian dollar exchange rate has increased steadily compared to the Vietnamese dollar in recent months, giving tourists many advantages.

An average meal or taxi drink is only about 5 AUDs, while 1-liter bottled water costs less than 1 AUD - very convenient for tourists who need to avoid using tap water, said the company representative.

The latest report from the Australian Tourism Association (ATIA) recorded that in April, Vietnam was the country with the highest growth rate of Australian tourists, reaching 28.5%, surpassing Japan (17%) and China (12.7%).

In the first 4 months of 2025, Vietnam recorded a 25% increase in the number of visitors from Australia, behind Japan (33.8%) and China (26.9%).
