The Khmer Women's Legal Literacy Club in Nam Thai Commune, An Bien District (Kien Giang) was established in 2019 and currently has 26 members. Since the club was established, women in the commune have not only been equipped with legal knowledge but also have the opportunity to share and support each other.
Ms. Lam Thi Chanh The - President of the Women's Union of Nam Thai commune - said that the club's operational goals focus on three main aspects: improving legal knowledge, providing free legal advice and support, and building a network of connections between members.
Every month, the club will organize activities that combine economic models such as revolving capital contributions to help women exchange knowledge and provide financial support to each other. The activities also include many contents related to labor rights, property rights and prevention of domestic violence. This shows that the role of women in the community is gradually being strengthened, especially in helping Khmer women.
With the support of the government and organizations, the Club is gradually becoming a reliable address, helping to improve the status of women and protect their legitimate rights.
Ms. Thach Thi Hien - Bao Lang hamlet, Nam Thai commune - confided: "When joining the club, I learned more about legal knowledge and building a happy family. Besides, thanks to the revolving capital contribution, I have a source of capital for investment, economic development, and limit the situation of borrowing high interest rates from outside. The knowledge I know, I will teach my children and share with women who do not know yet."
Ms. Thi Kim Van - Head of the Women's Association of Bao Lang Hamlet - shared: the association has 426 female members, of which 360 are Khmer members. In fact, women are interested in issues related to family, marriage, women's and children's rights. Therefore, the club provides information on support policies for women when facing legal difficulties, helping women to be more confident and understand their rights, prevent domestic violence and promote gender equality in society.
"The operation process also encountered many difficulties such as lack of funding, difficulty attracting more members and some women were still hesitant to participate. However, the members tried to overcome them to continue bringing efficiency and benefits to women," said Ms. Lam Thi Chanh The.
Over the past year, the club has provided legal advice to more than 35 women and organized three community events. These activities have contributed to enhancing the role of women in the community, reducing domestic violence and helping women become more confident when facing legal issues.
Ms. Lam Thi Chanh The said: “Every month, one woman receives capital through a lucky draw. The women cover their living expenses, buy livestock, buy health insurance, etc. Currently, women’s awareness has increased significantly, so it is necessary to expand the program so that more women can participate.”
The women members have formed a sense of respect and voluntary compliance with the law. They promote the strength of women's solidarity, contributing to maintaining security, order and social safety in the locality. The effectiveness of the Club also contributes to the successful implementation of the goal of building Nam Thai commune to meet the advanced New Rural standards in the coming time.
