Rainstorms, tornadoes, strong gusts of wind and hail in Lao Cai caused damage of about 10 billion VND, affecting 244 houses and many agricultural production areas.

According to the Lao Cai Electronic Information Portal, from the evening of April 22 to the morning of April 28, 2026, a natural disaster occurred in Lao Cai province due to thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, strong gusts of wind and localized hail. Although it occurred in a short time, the natural disaster affected a wide area, directly affecting the lives and production of people in many localities.

Natural disasters did not cause casualties but caused significant damage to housing, agriculture and essential infrastructure. Affected areas include Bat Xat, Van Chan, Ta Cu Ty, Coc San, Lien Son, Hop Thanh, Den Sang, Muong Bo, Ban Lien...

The whole province has 244 houses affected, of which 1 house is heavily damaged (50-70%) and 243 houses have their roofs blown off. Losses are concentrated in Bat Xat (54 houses), Van Chan (39 houses), Ta Cu Ty (25 houses), Coc San (21 houses).

In the agricultural sector, 4,255ha of rice was damaged; 13,461ha of annual crops were affected; 1.5ha of forestry trees were damaged. Some production facilities, especially greenhouses and net houses for growing medicinal herbs, were damaged with an area of thousands of square meters.

Regarding infrastructure, 3 school sites, 1 broadcasting station, 10 auxiliary works were damaged; 8 power poles and 1 transformer station were affected. Total damage is estimated at about 10 billion VND.

Immediately after the natural disaster, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control - Search and Rescue and localities deployed response and recovery work according to the "four on-site" motto. Militia forces, police and mass organizations were mobilized to support people to clear the scene, cover, reinforce houses, and move property to safe places.

In agricultural production, people are guided to restore the area of fallen crops, take care of them, fertilize them, drain water, and prevent pests and diseases to minimize damage. Essential works such as schools, electrical systems, and radio stations are inspected, dangerous areas are identified, and initial repairs are carried out to maintain operation.

To date, all 244 affected houses have been temporarily sheltered and reinforced. Production areas are being restored, and electrical systems and essential works continue to be repaired.

However, recovery work is still facing difficulties due to scattered damage, many households lack resources to repair houses, while the weather continues to potentially develop complicatedly.

Localities are continuing to overcome the consequences, stabilize people's lives, restore production and ensure safety against extreme weather phenomena.

At the same time, strengthen monitoring weather developments, timely warnings; prioritize supporting poor households and households in difficulty; accelerate the repair of essential works; guide people to proactively prevent thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hail to limit damage in the coming time.
