According to AccuWeather, Typhoon Ba Vi officially made landfall in the Northeast of Wenzhou city, Zhejiang province, eastern China on the night of July 11 and early morning of July 12 (local time), with sustained winds of about 139 km/h, equivalent to a level 1 typhoon on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
After entering the mainland, the storm continued to move in a Northwest direction and gradually weakened.
By the morning of July 12, the strongest wind near the storm center reached 110 km/h. Previously, in just about two days, storm Ba Vi had decreased from intensity equivalent to storm level 4 to level 2, before weakening to level 1 when making landfall.
Although weakened, Ba Vi is still forecast to continue to cause widespread heavy rain in eastern China until the end of July 13.
AccuWeather warns that common rainfall in eastern Chinese provinces where Typhoon Ba Vi passes can reach about 450 mm, some areas can reach 600 mm. Prolonged heavy rain increases the risk of flooding, flash floods, landslides, damage to houses, traffic disruption and affects transportation activities.
The storm is also forecast to cause widespread strong winds. gusts of wind can cause power outages, roofs to be blown off, infrastructure damage and affect logistics operations. Humidity from the storm's circulation then continues to move northward, possibly causing heavy rain in Northeast China and North Korea on July 14-15.
In addition, coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian are warned of the risk of coastal flooding due to the combination of strong winds, heavy rain and rising water levels.
Before the storm entered the mainland, China deployed large-scale response measures. More than 1.7 million people in Zhejiang province and more than 100,000 people in Fujian province were evacuated, bringing the total number of people displaced to more than 1.8 million people.
Earlier this week, while still at super typhoon intensity, Ba Vi swept through Rota Island in the Northern Mariana Islands and directly affected Guam. Rota Island is located about 80 km north of Andersen Air Force Base on Guam Island.
Meteorological stations recorded gusts of up to about 177 km/h in Saipan and about 154 km/h in Guam. Strong winds knocked down many broadcasting towers, causing serious damage to houses and causing many green trees to be uprooted or leaves to fall bare.
People and tourists in storm-affected areas are advised to stay in evacuated areas and closely monitor weather developments. Follow local instructions to ensure safety and avoid dangerous storms and flash floods.
