Unique pagoda located on the mountainside in the shape of a turtle in Quang Ninh

    Quang Ninh - My Cu Pagoda is located on the foot of Che Mountain at a height of 20m, the mountain has the shape of a turtle, in the pagoda there is a terracotta statue.

    Chùa Mỹ Cụ (tên chữ Sùng Khánh Tự) tọa lạc bên sườn núi Chè ở độ cao 20m. Núi Chè có hình con rùa (một trong tứ linh). Chùa quay về hướng Đông - Nam, phía trước là cánh đồng lúa xanh tốt, xa xa là sông Quế trải dài mềm mại, sau nữa là dải núi đất cây cối xanh tươi tựa những con kỳ lân chầu về đất Phật. Ngày nay, tuy nhân dân đã làm nhà phía dưới chân chùa nhưng trước chùa vẫn giữ được vẻ phong quang, thoáng đãng.
    Information from the Department of Culture and Society of Dong Trieu ward (Quang Ninh), My Cu Pagoda (Sung Khanh Tu script name) is located on the foot of Che mountain in Dong Trieu ward, at an altitude of 20m. Che mountain has the shape of a turtle (one of the four sacred animals). The pagoda faces Southeast, in front is a green rice field, far away is the gently stretched Que River, and then a strip of green mountains and trees. Today, although people have built houses at the foot of the pagoda, the pagoda still retains its airy and spacious appearance.
    Chùa được xây dựng ở làng Mỹ Cụ nên lấy tên làng đặt cho chùa với ý nghĩa “đất vua chùa làng”, làng quyết định sự tồn tại và phát triển chùa của làng mình. Tên làng được xuất phát từ truyền thuyết: “Tương truyền, xưa vua Trần Nhân Tông lên núi Yên Tử đi tu, dân làm cỗ ngon dâng vua, nên đặt tên là Mỹ Cụ”. Theo văn bia và qua truyền thuyết của nhân dân địa phương, chùa được xây dựng từ thời Trần, đã qua nhiều lần trùng tu.
    The pagoda was built in My Cu village, so the village name was given to the pagoda with the meaning "king land of village pagoda", the village determines the existence and development of its pagoda. According to the stele and through legends of local people, the pagoda was built from the Tran Dynasty, and has undergone many restorations.
    Ban đầu, cũng như nhiều ngôi chùa làng thời Trần, chùa được xây dựng trên cao, nhưng chỉ với quy mô vừa phải, theo kiểu chữ đinh. Đến các thời sau, chùa được mở rộng khá khang trang, bao gồm chùa chính, nhà tổ, nhà tăng,… tạo thành một kiến trúc tổng thể hình chữ khẩu. Vườn chùa rộng, cây cối xanh tốt, tạo nên một không gian vừa thoáng mát, vừa yên tĩnh.
    Initially, like many village pagodas of the Tran Dynasty, the pagoda was built on high ground, but only on a moderate scale, in the style of the "dinh" character. In later periods, the pagoda was expanded and spacious, including the main pagoda, ancestral house... forming an overall architecture in the shape of the "kou" character. Green trees, creating a space that is both airy and quiet.
    Nền chùa cao hơn sân 1,1m, lòng nhà lát gạch đỏ, mái lợp ngói mũi sấu thời Lê và mũi hài thời Nguyễn. Hậu cung mới sửa lại lợp ngói ta.
    The main pagoda today still has traditional architectural features that need to be preserved. The pagoda's foundation is 1.1m higher than the yard, the inside of the house is paved with red bricks, the roof is tiled with crocodile nose tiles from the Le Dynasty and the hài nose tiles from the Nguyen Dynasty. The newly repaired rear palace is tiled with ta tiles. The main pagoda consists of 7 chambers for worshiping and 3 chambers for the rear palace, the walls are built of red bricks, and the foundation of the pagoda is built of stone.

    The structure and sculpture are still quite intact.

    My Cu Pagoda relic is a village pagoda that still preserves quite a few statues, pedestals, stone steles and ancient artifacts. In particular, the pagoda has some statues from the Tay Son and Nguyen dynasties that are very valuable in sculpture art, imbued with folk features and carving techniques of that time. Among the statues at the pagoda, there are statues made of terracotta such as the A Di Da statue made in the Tay Son period, 165cm high, shoulder-length 120cm wide, in a sitting meditation position.
    Tại chùa còn nhiều hiện vật có giá trị cùng các bia đá ghi lại quá trình trùng tu của chùa qua các năm.
    At the pagoda, there are still many valuable artifacts and stone steles recording the pagoda's restoration process over the years. My Cu Pagoda was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic in 2000.
