Tropical Storm Maria weakened into a tropical depression early on the morning of August 13 in the Sea of Japan, after bringing strong winds and record rainfall to the Tohoku region.
Meanwhile, tropical storm Ampil could approach the Kanto area this weekend.

Meteorological agencies warned that although weakened, Maria could still cause heavy rain in some areas as it moved slowly over the sea. The storm made landfall near Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture yesterday morning and caused significant impacts:
A level 5 emergency warning has also been issued for people in Kuji, Iwate Prefecture. Many rivers in Iwate rose, causing flooding in Iwaizumi town and Kamaishi city of this country.
According to Japan Times , Maria is the third tropical storm to hit Tohoku from the Pacific coast since statistics began in 1951.

Meanwhile, tropical storm Ampil also formed south of Japan in the Pacific Ocean. Forecasts show Ampil could approach eastern Japan this weekend.
The storm is forecast to strengthen into a typhoon as it approaches Honshu island on August 16 and August 17 local time.
