Tropical Storm 4 Debby weakens into a tropical depression and is moving along the eastern coast of the United States, causing heavy rain and threatening severe flooding in many areas of the country.
According to the latest warning from the National Weather Service NWS College Park MD of the National Hurricane Center (NHC), as of 23:00 on August 8, 2024 local time, the center of the tropical depression Debby is approximately 135 km north-northeast of Charlotte, North Carolina, with a sustained wind speed of 45 km/h.
Debby is moving northeast at a speed of 43 km/h and is expected to continue moving faster in the next 24 hours. Although the intensity of the tropical depression is not expected to change much, it is still expected to cause heavy rain and flooding.
In addition to heavy rain, Debby also poses a risk of tornadoes from North Carolina to Virginia and Maryland on the night of August 9 (local time), and may spread to New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and southeastern New York the next day.
A coastal flood warning has also been issued for areas along the coast from North Carolina to New Jersey, including the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River.
