Hanoi targets high-spending Chinese tourists

Hanoi is promoting tourism in Beijing and Tianjin, aiming to deeply exploit the Chinese market, attracting groups of tourists with high spending capacity.

Within the framework of the 2026 tourism promotion program, Hanoi city organizes a working delegation to participate in the Hanoi - Vietnam Tourism Introduction Program in Beijing and the 2026 China Culture and Tourism Industry Fair in Tianjin, taking place from September 1 to 6.

The activity is implemented within the framework of the "Vietnam - China Tourism Cooperation Year 2026-2027" and the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between Hanoi city and Beijing city for the period 2026-2030, aiming to expand the network of partners, exchange customer sources and build inter-route tourism programs.

China is currently the largest tourist destination market for Vietnamese tourism. In 2025, Vietnam welcomed more than 5.28 million Chinese tourists, accounting for about 25% of the total number of international visitors. Hanoi alone welcomed more than 670,965 overnight Chinese tourists, accounting for more than 12% of the total number of international visitors to the Capital.

In the first 7 months of 2026, Vietnam welcomed about 3.08 million Chinese tourists. Hanoi welcomed about 461,438 Chinese tourists staying, continuing to bring this market into the capital's key international tourist group.

Instead of just focusing on increasing quantity, Hanoi is aiming for a segment of high-cost customers in Beijing, while expanding the market in Tianjin, focusing on high-end resort and tourism products. This approach aims to build products close to the needs of each customer group, extend stays and increase spending at destinations.

Opening the series of activities, on the afternoon of September 1st, at Beijing Phi Thien Hotel, the program introducing Hanoi - Vietnam tourist destinations in Beijing took place with the participation of representatives of the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnamese Embassy in China, the Beijing Department of Culture and Tourism, Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, 14 Hanoi tourism and travel businesses and more than 100 Chinese travel businesses and units.

Here, Hanoi introduces destination images, cultural tourism products, heritage, cuisine, urban experiences, accommodation systems, infrastructure and air connectivity. Businesses from both sides also directly exchange views on tourist needs, build tours, connect services and organize programs to bring Chinese tourists to Hanoi.

Ms. Quach Truc Thanh - Deputy Director of the Beijing Department of Culture and Tourism - assessed that Hanoi's direct organization of a promotion program in Beijing is a practical step to exploit the Chinese market and introduce the unique features of the Capital of Vietnam.

The program is also a quality forum for businesses operating in the fields of culture, tourism, transportation, accommodation, media... to effectively connect and cooperate deeply," Ms. Quach Truc Thanh said.

According to a representative of the Beijing Department of Culture and Tourism, Beijing will organize a delegation to Hanoi in the near future to implement exchange and connection activities, thereby strengthening tourism cooperation between the two cities.

Mr. Nguyen Tran Quang - Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism - said that China has always been identified by Hanoi as one of the key markets in the capital's international tourism promotion strategy.

Hanoi hopes not only to attract more Chinese tourists but also to build long-term, substantive cooperative relations with localities and major cities of China," said Mr. Nguyen Tran Quang.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tran Quang, through promotion activities in Beijing and Tianjin, Hanoi wants to create conditions for businesses of both sides to directly research market needs, build suitable products and expand linked tour programs.

With the message "Tourism is a bridge of friendship", leaders of the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism believe that tourism cooperation can contribute to strengthening exchanges and understanding between the people of the two countries, and at the same time open up new products and tour routes.

In addition to promoting destinations, B2B, B2C meetings and business connections are considered key contents. Through direct exchanges, Hanoi businesses and Chinese partners have the opportunity to understand the needs of each customer group, introduce products and services, and find specific cooperation options.

Participating in the 2026 China Culture and Tourism Industry Fair in Tianjin continues to help Hanoi expand its network of partners outside the Beijing market, towards high value-added products and increasing the connectivity of tour routes between cities of the two countries.

According to Hanoi's orientation, promotion in China in the coming time will focus more on each customer segment, improve product quality and increase linkages between businesses. Through this, the Capital aims to effectively exploit the large international tourist market, instead of just setting a growth target in quantity.
