On the afternoon of April 9, Novotel Nha Trang Hotel organized a charcoal burning program from coffee grounds for all tourists who are on a vacation here.
Previously, all the coffee grounds that the hotel staff had to waste after processing had to be thrown away. Recognizing the waste of resources, Novotel Nha Trang Hotel coordinated to organize a class to make charcoal from coffee grounds to reduce the amount of waste released into the environment.
Visitors are guided by staff on recipes to create products. In particular, coffee grounds will be mixed with cornstarch - one of the highest-glycemic, environmentally friendly powders. With the ratio of 2 parts of coffee starch, plus 1 part of cornstarch and just enough water, visitors mix well to create a mixture of sticky rice flour.
Through a manual press, it took visitors only 3 minutes to create a carbon cake from coffee grounds with their own pressing power.
The coal cake is then dried and used like regular charcoal. The durability of coal when burning depends on the compression strength when the person creates the cake mold.
Excitedly participating in an experience program at the hotel for the first time, Ms. Tho, a tourist from Australia - said: "My husband and I had 2 hours of interesting experiences when working with many customers making handmade coal. It is even more enjoyable when these charcoal balls are reused from the coffee waste we use every day.
So there is no need to do away with it, but the coffee grounds will be reused to serve grilled meat dishes at the hotel's restaurant. This is meaningful in reducing the use of charcoal and reducing the impact on forest trees, so I really like it.
Attracted by the sharing of guests who have participated in the practice, Mr. Khursed - a tourist from Moscow (Russian Federation) and everyone created recycled products from coffee grounds.
This is a famous plant species in Vietnam, I was attracted by the knowledge about recycling products that seem to be thrown away. I learned more things not only about my skill but also about being proud of contributing to protecting the surrounding living environment" - Mr. Khured happily said.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Phuong - General Manager of Novotel Nha Trang Hotel, the tourism industry is one of the spearhead economic sectors of Khanh Hoa and the development of sustainable green tourism is something that the hotel is taking action on.
Currently, the hotel is striving to achieve Green Key certification - an international certification of sustainability for businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry.
The experience of making coal from coffee branches will be maintained once a quarter. We believe that modern tourism is not only about enjoying but also an opportunity for tourists to accompany sustainable values. Today's workshop is a testament to the hotel's commitment to developing tourism associated with environmental responsibility," Ms. Phuong added.
