Based on the 2019 Labor Code, employees are entitled to 11 holidays and Tet holidays with full salary each year, including: New Year's Day (1 day), Lunar New Year (5 days), Hung Kings Commemoration Day (1 day), Victory Day April 30 (1 day), International Labor Day May 1 (1 day) and National Day September 2 (2 days).
For the National Day of 2026, civil servants, public employees and laborers are entitled to 2 days off according to regulations, which is September 2, 2026 (Wednesday) and the immediately preceding day is September 1, 2026 (Tuesday).
Notably, due to the exchange of working days from Monday (August 31, 2026) to compensatory work on Saturday (August 22, 2026), the holiday will be extended from August 29 (Saturday) to the end of September 2 (Wednesday), for a total of 5 consecutive days.
The Ministry of Home Affairs requests agencies and units to arrange reasonable duty schedules, ensuring smooth work resolution, serving people and organizations. For units that do not have fixed weekend holidays, it is necessary to arrange appropriate holiday schedules according to legal regulations.
For the business sector, employers can choose the National Day holiday option including September 2nd and one of the two adjacent days being September 1st or September 3rd, depending on production and business conditions. The holiday schedule must be announced at least 30 days in advance.
The State also encourages businesses to apply similar holiday schedules to civil servants and public employees or have a more profitable holiday regime for employees.
Regarding holiday policies, the National Assembly has passed a resolution on the development of Vietnamese culture, effective from July 1, 2026. Accordingly, November 24 every year is chosen as Vietnam Culture Day, workers are allowed to take leave and receive full salary.
Because November 24, 2026 falls on Tuesday, many opinions proposed a plan to swap working days to create a 4-day holiday, from November 21 to the end of November 24, in order to create conditions for workers to rest and participate in cultural activities.
Thus, after the April 30 - May 1 holiday, workers will have the nearest long holiday on National Day September 2, with a total holiday time of up to 5 consecutive days. This is also a favorable opportunity for people and tourists to return to their hometowns to visit relatives or plan resorts and domestic and international tourism.
