Onana joined Man United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £47.2 million, expected to become a key piece in the team's restructuring process. However, a series of mistakes caused the 29-year-old goalkeeper to lose his official position. This season, he was left out of the opening three Premier League games, before being loaned to Trabzonspor.
At the same time, M.U completed the deal to recruit young goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18.1 million, on the last day of the summer transfer window. Lammens quickly made a strong impression in his first five appearances and also very much stuck with coach Amorim's philosophy of deploying the ball.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, M.U did not include a buy dispute in the loan deal between Onana and Trabzonspor. Thus, the Cameroonian goalkeeper will be forced to return to Old Trafford in the summer.
However, Man United's plans are gradually becoming clearer, as they determine Lammens will be the number one goalkeeper, while Onana will have to find a new destination. In Romano's latest share, he said:
In this case, compared to Hojland and Rashford, there is no broken purchase clause included in the deal. Onana will officially return to United at the beginning of the 2026 summer transfer window, but I understand United are very happy with Senne Lammens.
At the moment, I don't think Onana will be in Manchester United's plans. Maybe the idea would be to say goodbye, find a solution for Onana, as well as explore the market.
By the time he left Man United on loan, Onana had made more than 70 appearances for the Red Devils. He has kept a clean sheet in many important matches but also made some direct mistakes leading to goals conceded - a factor that caused him to lose points in the eyes of the coaching staff and forced him to leave Old Trafford.
