Carbonated drinks
Carbonated drinks often contain photphoric acid, which can cause calcium-phosphorus imbalance, an important factor for bone strength. When phosphorus levels are too high and calcium is low, the body will compensate by removing calcium from bones, making bones brittle and prone to fracture over time.
Drinks containing caffeine
Supplementing too much caffeine through coffee and energy drinks can increase calcium secretion through urine. This gradual loss of calcium can lead to lower bone mineral density, making bones more susceptible to weakness, especially in postmenopausal women or those with pre-existing bone problems.
Sugar and sweeteners with high fructose content
Refined sugar such as corn syrup is high in fructose and maltodextrin, which are harmful to the body. High sugar intake can cause insulin resistance and inflammation throughout the body. Both affect hormones that help build and maintain bone mass. In addition, too much sugar hinders the absorption of important minerals such as magnesium and calcium, further weakening bone health.
