Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive and does not produce enough hormones, causing metabolism to slow down, making weight loss difficult. Here's advice from Lisa Andrews, a clinical nutritionist at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center.
1. Sleep 7 to 9 hours every night
Quality sleep can help improve metabolism and reduce stress. From there, it creates conditions for you to quickly achieve your weight loss goal.
2. Add more protein
A slowed metabolism is a typical symptom of hypothyroidism, and eating more protein can help the body burn more calories over time. So adding protein to your diet helps you feel full longer.
3. Weight training 2 days/week
Weight training is an exercise that helps burn a lot of calories and increase energy consumption. For people with hypothyroidism, weight training is a turning point for health. Plus, you only need to lift weights twice a week to see results.
4. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber and vitamins but low in calories, so they are great for weight loss. Additionally, antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can help reduce chronic inflammation.
5. Regular health check-ups
Make sure you have regular checkups, complete required tests, and take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
