On October 27, Nghe An Department of Health announced that Nghe An General Hospital had just saved the life of a 37-year-old female patient with septic shock, severe ARDS complicated pneumonia using ECMO Hybrid technique.
Female patient N.T.H., residing in Nghe An, was hospitalized in a state of acute respiratory failure and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. The patient breathed quickly, contracted, SpO2 was only 70%, and the lungs exploded on both sides. The diagnosis recorded septic shock, pneumonia with severe ARDS complications, acute myocardial damage, and multiple organ failure.

Despite being resuscitated actively, the disease progressed rapidly with perception disorders and severe respiratory failure requiring intubation and ventilating a ventilator. 3 types of cardiometabolic and cardiac support drugs with high doses still do not achieve the target of blood oxidation and blood pressure, the risk of death is very high.
Doctors decided to use ECMO artificial heart and lung. Because the patient had severe low blood pressure and respiratory failure at the same time, the team deployed a V-A-V form of Hybrid ECMO, combined with respiratory and circulatory support at the same time.
After the intervention, circulation and respiratory conditions improved, and the indicators returned to the target threshold. The patient is currently conscious, good contact, stable testing and is eligible for discharge.
Nghe An General Hospital has implemented ECMO since 2021 and has treated many death-threatening critical cases, of which Hybrid ECMO is an important solution for cases of respiratory failure with complex cardiopulmonary shock.
