Here are the things to do before and after eating, shared by Dr. Swathi Reddy (Motherhood Hospital, India).

Things to avoid after eating

- Don't shower immediately after eating

Showering right after a meal can cause blood to be scattered from the stomach, slowing down the digestion and absorption of nutrients. In particular, bathing in hot water also increases body temperature and heart rate, easily causing a feeling of fullness, discomfort or nausea. Therefore, you should wait at least an hour after eating and then take a bath to stabilize your body.

- Don't sleep immediately after meals

Many people have the habit of resting right after eating, but this can easily lead to acid reflux, heartburn and increase the risk of weight gain. It is best to sit relaxed or walk gently for 20-30 minutes to digest food.

- No high-intensity exercise

Exercising right after a meal can cause blood to accumulate in the muscles rather than the stomach, causing cramps, indigestion and fatigue. So take a light walk of 10-15 minutes to stimulate digestion and reduce bloating.

- Do not brush your teeth immediately

Brushing your teeth immediately after a meal, especially when you just eat something sour or spicy, can erode tooth enamel. You should wait at least 20 - 30 minutes before cleaning your teeth.

Things to do before and after eating

- Drink a glass of warm water before meals

Drinking warm water helps soothe the stomach, prevent overeating and aid digestion. However, you should not drink too much water immediately after eating because it can dilute the flavor.

- Wear comfortable clothes when eating

tight-fitting clothing puts pressure on the abdomen, which can lead to esophageal reflux and bloating. Choose loose, airy outfits for easier digestion.

- Keep your hands clean before eating

Washing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds helps remove bacteria and prevent digestive diseases. This is a simple habit that many people still ignore.
