Health Risks of Not Doing This Every Day

Not having a bowel movement every day can cause a number of health problems.

Potential health risks

According to Dr Vikas Jindal, consultant gastroenterologist at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi (India), when bowel movements are irregular or infrequent, the body will experience discomfort and potential health problems.

Not having a daily bowel movement can lead to a buildup of waste in the colon, causing bloating, abdominal pain, and discomfort.

According to Dr. Jindal, if constipation persists, the rectal and pelvic muscles will be strained, increasing the risk of hemorrhoids and anal fissures. In severe cases, fecal impaction can lead to fecal impaction, requiring medical intervention.

Agreeing, Dr Rahul Dubbaka, consultant gastroenterologist at CARE Hospital, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad (India), said that this condition can occur due to many causes, including dehydration, lack of exercise, use of certain medications and medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or diabetes.

When stools move too slowly, they become hard and difficult to pass, causing discomfort.

How to improve this situation

To maintain regular bowel movements, focus on a diet rich in fiber, including whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Dr. Vikas Jindal recommends drinking plenty of water, as this helps soften stools.

In addition, regular physical activity will stimulate intestinal motility and promote digestion.

Regular bowel movements, especially after meals, will help stimulate the natural urge to defecate. However, laxatives should be avoided as they can weaken the bowel muscles if used long term.

Note

If irregular bowel movements persist despite lifestyle changes, this could be a sign of underlying problems such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hypothyroidism, or a dietary imbalance.

If you experience symptoms such as severe pain, blood in your stool or unexplained weight loss, seek medical advice, as these could be signs of more serious conditions, Dr. Jindal recommends.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dubbaka also notes that, although over-the-counter laxatives, bulk laxatives, and stimulant laxatives can help relieve constipation, they should be used with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
